THE MONMOUTH INDEPENDENCE COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONIn 2000, a shared dream sparked the creation of the Monmouth-Independence Community Foundation—a vision to uplift and empower our community. Over the past 25 years, this independent nonprofit has become a vital force dedicated to enriching the lives of those who call the greater Monmouth-Independence area home. With a heart full of passion for education, a drive to strengthen classrooms, and a commitment to community excellence, we have been lighting the way to a brighter future for a quarter-century.
At the core of our mission are four dynamic pillars: awarding scholarships to ambitious Central High School seniors, fueling classroom enrichment initiatives, championing community excellence, and building strong partnerships with local organizations.
Highlights of 25 Years of Community Impact:

What are the Purposes of the Foundation?
Our Foundation’s mission is to raise funds to support educational, civic, recreational, and cultural activities, programs, institutions, and facilities that benefit the residents of the Monmouth and Independence communities and the students in the Central 13J School District. We are dedicated to enhancing the Monmouth-Independence community by funding initiatives that serve both youth and adults within our community.
In Memory of Marilyn Morton
Some people quietly shape a community in ways that cannot be measured. Marilyn Morton was one of those rare individuals.
For more than three decades, Marilyn dedicated her life to serving the communities of Monmouth and Independence with unwavering kindness, humility, and purpose. Her heart for service was evident in every role she embraced and in the people she encouraged. She believed that strong communities are built on generosity, collaboration, and genuine human connection, and she lived those values every day.
Since making her home in Independence in 1990, Marilyn became a steadfast leader and advocate for the place she loved. Elected to the Independence City Council in 2002, she faithfully served her community for more than two decades, including multiple terms as Council President. Her leadership was thoughtful, compassionate, and always rooted in a desire to improve the lives of those around her.
The Monmouth-Independence Community Foundation was especially blessed by Marilyn’s dedication. As Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors for more than twenty years, she helped build the Foundation into an enduring source of opportunity and hope for our communities. Marilyn believed that investing in people strengthens communities, and her vision continues to be reflected in the scholarships awarded to local students, the grants that empower nonprofit organizations, and the community projects that enrich residents’ lives throughout Monmouth and Independence.
Marilyn’s commitment extended far beyond the Foundation. She generously shared her time and talents with the Independence Downtown Association, the Monmouth Business Association, and the Heritage Museum Society. For more than two decades, she organized the beloved Independence Ghost Walk, supported countless community celebrations, and was always ready to lend a helping hand wherever needed.
Professionally, Marilyn brought a remarkable breadth of experience to every endeavor. Whether in finance and escrow, teaching piano, running her home office business, or publishing her writing, she approached each opportunity with integrity, curiosity, and excellence. She believed that communication was the foundation of every successful relationship and worked tirelessly to bring people together through understanding, collaboration, and a shared purpose.
Yet Marilyn’s greatest gift was not in her titles or accomplishments; it was in how she made people feel. She welcomed others with warmth, listened with compassion, celebrated the successes of those around her, and quietly encouraged countless individuals to become leaders. She had a rare ability to bring people together, inspire hope, and remind us that every act of kindness can strengthen a community.
Marilyn’s legacy cannot be measured solely by the organizations she served or the programs she helped create. It lives on in the students who will pursue their dreams through scholarships she helped establish, in the nonprofit organizations that will continue serving others through Foundation grants, in the friendships she cultivated, and in the countless lives she touched through her generosity and her unwavering belief in the power of community.
While our hearts are heavy with the loss of our dear friend, mentor, and fellow board member, we are deeply grateful for the gift of Marilyn’s life. Her compassion, wisdom, leadership, and servant’s heart have left an indelible mark on Monmouth and Independence that will endure for generations.
